Anatomy of Kempo

Anatomy of Kempo

Our Goal here is to design the ultimate study guide for those in the Kempo/Kenpo arts.

We are using Shaolin Kempo but these discussions will work for all Martial art styles.

SHARE this with your Teacher/Instructor/ of your Martial Arts School
You can learn from books videos and more but nothing compares to the touch of the Masters hand on your life.

On the next few pages you will see I have broken the system down move by move from White to black belt including blocking systems, combinations and forms.
The Material after Black Belt has been written out Step by Step, Move by Move all the forms up to 5th degree Black belt. However The Material has not been plugged into the Anatomy of Kempo I left some work for you to do. I have yet to meet an Instructor, Teacher, or Master who just handed out all the answers. Remember this is a study guide.
The Anatomy of Kempo breaking down the moves in the Shaolin Kempo system.
We are referring to the Blocking systems, Combinations and Forms only.
We know the Jujitsu techniques The Kempo punch techniques Club, Knife and Gun is different from school to school.
We are going to start you off with a few questions and some of them will be answered. Remember this is a study guide.

What is the number one stance in the system? From White to Black belt including blocking systems, combinations, and forms almost 80 Horse stances are used. The Cat Stance is approximately half that of the Horse from White to Black. When you study the rest of the forms up to 5th degree will this statement stay true the ratio of Cat to Horse stances?
What is the number one block inward or upward or maybe something else?
What is the number one Punch or strike?
The Front Two knuckle Punch is the first strike we are taught but is it the most widely used in the system.
Front punch vs. thrust punch I found 38 front punches and 24 thrust punches up to Black Belt One Front punch was used in the combinations up to Black belt all other front two knuckle punches were in the forms and blocking sets.
Out of the 24 thrust punches 11 were used in the combinations.
If you believe Forms are for basics and combinations teach us the fighting arts. Then that raises another question.
What is the number one Kick? Front Kick, I only count 19 in the system from White to black belt.
Back kick; I count 2 from White to Black belt.
Side Kick, I count 16 from white to Black.
Round house Kick, I Count 3 before black belt
Crescent Kick, I count 2 before black belt
Reverse Crescent Kick, I count ZERO before Black belt in the required material blocking systems Combinations and Forms.
Hook Kick, I found 1 in combination #28
Ax Kick, I Found ZERO before Black Belt
Flying Front Kick, The First one is in Kata Six a Black Belt form

Spinning back kick, The First one is in Combination #12

What about Blocking on the outside closing off the centerline?
Example combination #3 Step up Inward block thrust punch.
The Stance gave you angle and position the block and counter punch gave you control momentarily of all their weapons. We see from this position they can’t strike with the other hand or foot. Why then in the first forty combinations are we told 21 times go to the inside? Remember your answer to these and many more questions will change from Black belt to 5th degree.
In one form we call the move a rising back fist in another form it’s called a Sun fist. What two forms am I discussing and why do we change the name?
We study six animals Snake Tiger Dragon Leopard Crane and Monkey How many times can you find a Snake, Tiger Dragon, Leopard, Crane or Monkey movement or technique in the system?
Which animal dominates the system?

What combinations use back up mass as a principle?
What combinations use Marriage of Gravity as a principle?
What combinations use Torque as a principle?

What muscles come into play in a front ball kick?
What muscles come into play in a back kick?

The triangle VS over the shoulder what do you find works?
First the triangle an imaginary line drawn from shoulders to solar plexus focus in this area while blocking punches from your practice partner.

Second over the shoulder have your practice partner stand in a fighting stance as you look over their closest shoulder using peripheral vision block their strikes as you focus over the shoulder

Once we engage an attacker there is continuous destructive motion based on continuous contact. This is how Kempo flows with striking and locking and felling as a single fighting system. True or False

What combinations are offensive in nature? Example may be 8, 9 and 12

What combinations are defensive in nature? Examples may be 3, 4, and 16

What combinations can you use in sparring?
What combinations are jujitsu techniques in nature?

We know to practice are techniques Right side and left.
However which combinations will work inside and out?
Example (Combination #6 we block, kick, cross and cover) blocking inside or outside the technique works it’s a simple maneuver.
Combination # 2 we block /back two knuckle/ elbow/ scoop take down/ knife hand all on the inside try this on the outside
When we practice combination #5 we go inside try this technique on the outside.
When you try combinations # 3, 4, 18 and many more you will get a different response from your practice partner.
We say grab at lower ranks and Seize at the higher ranks why dose the terminology change?
What about the 1000 reps?
We here a lot about how important it is to practice all your material 1000 times for each combination, blocking system, and forms. The question here How many of you can say I have done Pinion One my first form 1000 reps before I received my black belt. How many of us can say we have practiced Kata Five 1000 reps before black belt?

What is the ratio of Hand strikes to Kicks? I found from white to black almost 500 hand strikes punches strikes elbows and the like verses just over 100 kick from knees to front kicks back kicks side kicks round house kicks hook kicks and crescents. That’s a Five to One ratio. Remember to insert the Material up to 5th degree and see how much the ratio changes.

We have presented a few questions and given some answers to get you started. Take this guide to your dojo and ask your instructor or fellow students to develop a series of questions and compare answers. The higher you go in rank from White to Black and ultimately Master level many of the questions and answers will change Good Luck on your Journey
